Summary of Dr Hou's Presentation
- Summarized by Edward Wan
Topic:
Anti-aging Practices -Chinese medicine approaches to protect cells and organ
damages
Dr. Hou begin the seminar by explaining the fundamental aspects of Traditional
Chinese Medicine including the concept of Yin
(the visible part of your body like organs) and Yan (the invisible parts of your
body like Qi). She explained that the aging is a nature
process that can be traced directly at the individual cell level. The human body
is constantly renewed itself by replacing aging cells
with new cells. As we grow old, the body’s renewing process is slowing down and
thus affects every part of the body including the
organ functions, the immune systems, and neurological systems. She has shown
that a variety of diseases could be linked to the
deterioration and degeneration of body cells. She explained that, sometimes, the
western medicines only address the prevention
of acute symptoms and neglect the repairs and curing of20fundamental causes. For
example, she explained that most patients
having high-blood pressure was the direct result of fatty fiber deposits
building up in the blood vessel, making the narrowing of
the blood vessel. The western medicines tackle the problem by prescribing water
bill, calcium blocker etc. In contrast, the Chinese
medicine try to break up the fatty fiber structures interconnected within the
vessel wall. She mentioned that a Chinese food, Shanchar,
is a powerful ingredient for lowering blood pressure in the long run.
Dr. Hou indicated that Traditional Chinese medicine has made a
tremendous stride in recent years by incorporating proven western medical
diagnostic techniques. Since the traditional Chinese method
for diagnostic the patients are primarily depending on examining the persona’s
tongue and measuring the person’s pause. These methods
are sometimes obsolete because the patient may have taken some medications that
could hide the symptoms. Thus, she would prefer to
treat patients who have already known or diagnose with acute symptoms of known
diseases.
During the last 30 minutes, Dr. Hou demonstrated her experience by examining
individual’s tongue. It was amazing that Dr Hou was able to
reveal potential health problems for many people by just examining individual’s
tongue (the shape, the color, the broken pattern etc.)
